New Study You may not be an Extrovert Or An Introvert

There is no such thing as a pure introvert or extrovert. Such a person would be in the lunatic asylum”. – Carl G Jung

My mentoring organization leads business owner round tables. At many of our round table meetings the conversation of one of us being an “Introvert” or an “Extrovert” usually comes up. The general consensus is usually something like this.

  • Extroversion relates to how outgoing someone is
  • Introversion relates to how shy or quiet someone is.

That was kind of my general belief as well. But after researching the topic of Extrovert  or Introvert for this week’s CEOM mastermind my research into Carl Jung who developed the term however found that common belief is really off!

The term introvert and extrovert (originally spelled extravert) were popularized by Carl Jung in the early 20th century. However, their meanings got confused between then and now, and we all started thinking that everyone belongs to one camp or the other. But actually, Carl’s point was that these are the very extremes of a scale. This means that many people fall somewhere in the middle of introvert and extravert. People in the middle of the scale are named Ambiverts.

Recent research has shown that introvert and extrovert actually relate to where we get our energy from. Or in other words, how we recharge our brains batteries

Introverts (or those of us with introverted tendencies) tend to recharge by spending time alone. They lose energy from being around people for long periods of time, particularly large crowds.

Extroverts, on the other hand, gain energy from other people. Extroverts actually find their energy is sapped when they spend too much time alone. They recharge by being social.

In the 60s, psychologist Hans Eysenck proposed that the difference between introverts and extroverts was that they simply had different levels of arousal—meaning the extent to which our minds and bodies are alert and responsive to stimulation.

For introverts, this kind of stimulation can be overwhelming, since their rate of arousal is much higher, so they are stimulated easily. Time alone, one-on-one conversations and predictable situations are more likely to be pleasant for introverts who are more sensitive to external stimulation.

Introverts are tricky to understand, since it’s so easy for us to assume that introversion is the same as being shy, when in fact introverts are simply people who find it tiring to be around other people. For introverts, to be alone with our thoughts is as restorative as sleeping, as nourishing as eating. Introverted people are known for thinking things through before they speak, enjoying small, close groups of friends and one-on-one time, needing time alone to recharge and being upset by unexpected changes or last-minute surprises. Introverts are not necessarily shy, and may not even avoid social situations, but they will definitely need some time alone or just with close friends or family after spending time in a big crowd.

how-to-care Introverts

Extroverts: On the opposite side of the coin, people who are Extroverted are energized by people. They usually enjoy spending time with others, as this is how they recharge from time spent alone focusing or working hard. This is for example how an extrovert explains the way they gain energy from being around other people: When I am among people, I make eye contact, smile, and maybe chat if there’s an opportunity (like being stuck in a long grocery store line). As an extrovert, that’s a small ‘ping’ of needed energy, a little positive moment in the day.

Ambiverts – the in-between’s

Since introverts and extroverts are the extremes of the scale, the rest of us fall somewhere in the middle. Many of us lean one way or the other, but there are some who are quite balanced between the two tendencies. These people are named Ambiverts.

For this research and CEOM lesson I took a personality test. As it turns out I fall in the middle of Introvert and Extrovert… I am an Ambivert.

I took the free test 1-3-2014: TEST LINK:

Here is what my test result said: “You’re an Ambivert. That means you’re neither strongly introverted nor strongly extraverted. Recent research by Adam Grant of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Management has found that Ambiverts make the best salespeople. Ambiverts tend to be adept at the quality of attunement. They know when to push and when to hold back, when to speak up and when to shut up. So don’t fall for the myth of the extraverted sales star. Just keep being your Ambiverted self”.

Additional, Ambiverts exhibit both extroverted and introverted tendencies. This means that they generally enjoy being around people, but after a long time this will start to drain them. I recognize this in myself and even mentioned it I think at our last mastermind. My guess is some of you are Ambiverts as well. Ambiverts enjoy solitude and quiet, but not for too long.

Ambiverts recharge their energy levels with a mixture of social interaction and alone time. For me I can be home two days working and writing, but on day 3 I need to be out meeting face to face with people. If I do not get out with people and have a stimulating conversation I get tired and agitated and become unproductive, as my energy was drained after two days of being an introvert. Being in the middle I need half time as an extrovert and half time as in introvert any given week. I have learned through trial and error that  two days inside by myself working and writing and then two days outside meeting with friends and business associates works very well for optimum balanced energy and happiness for my psyche.

Though Ambiverts seem to be the more boring personality type by being in the middle of everyone else, this balance can actually be a good thing. A study by Adam Grant, author of *Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success found that Ambiverts perform much better in sales than either pure introverts or pure extroverts. Ambiverts actually closed 24% more sales.

The commonly held myth that being highly extroverted is important for a salesperson is actually untrue, since extreme extroverts lack the balance of a Ambiverts which helps them to use varied and creative approaches to closing a sale. I call it good cop…bad cop marketing.:]

In closing I suggest you take the Introvert / Extrovert test. It is free….TEST LINK:

Then knowing where you are on the scale you will better know how to flow your energy and discharge, or recharge your energy level for the week.

Also, remember we live in an ever-changing creative Universe. Nothing is fixed. You can change how you react to life and who you are by your thoughts and repetition. We are masters –  not prisoners of our mind and our DNA.

Stop giving a damn about everything. But do a big damn about one thing. Care only about what is important. Don’t give a second thought to everything else. Screw what others think. Screw what others have. Screw what others want. What do you want? Screw everything else. You can’t have a passion for everything, but you can have a passion for one thing.

Don’t hide in the darkness. Bathe in the light.

Stop being pissed off, about always being pissed off. Stop being mad at yourself, for always being mad at yourself. Stop being unhappy, for always being unhappy. Get over your ego. Get over your feelings. Get over your thoughts. They are barriers.

Everything you give a damn about owns you. Less is better. More is worse.

When I could not stand my f*****g career anymore I became free. When I gave a damn I was blind. When I finally didn’t give a damn what would happen and quit at the height of my career, I rose to a new height. I saw the light. It was always there. I just couldn’t see it in the darkness.

Fall down often. Just get up. Fail often. Just don’t quit. The more you fight your fears, the stronger your fears get.

Stop perusing feeling happy. Stop perusing enlightenment. You are the Light. By perusing it you are telling yourself and everyone else you are not happy and not enlightened. You don’t pursue what you already have. You pursue what you think you don’t have. The more you pursue the light the darker it gets.

Stop giving a f**k about all the small crap. When you stop chasing what you want, it will chase you. Alan Watts, the Zen philosopher called it the Backwards Law.

Don’t build more walls of fear in your mind. Knock them down. They are not solid. Let them blow away. The more walls of fear you build, the bigger your prison becomes. The bigger the minds prison walls the darker it gets.

When there are no walls, the light shine’s in.

Carl Jung: What He would Think of the Obama Iran Treaty

Lamb and the Wolf

Lamb and the Wolf

Carl Gustav Jung; 26 July 1875 – 6 June 1961), often referred to as C. G. Jung, was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology.

His work has been influential not only in psychiatry but also in philosophy, anthropology, archaeology, literature, and religious studies. He was a prolific writer, though many of his works were not published until after his death.

I have studied Jung for years and he is always one of my go to sources in research for by writings; books and blogs. I was recently reading the following letter he wrote to a pastor in 1951 who was advocating for Germany to disarm. Jung wrote the pastor and to the pastors surprise felt it would be disaster for Germany to NOT rearm.

Jung pointed out that those who are pacifists in the face of evil have a subconscious wish to be martyrs and die a glorious death.

“The really dangerous ones are the harmless dreamers who don’t know that they want to perish gloriously yet again through their accursed playing the savior.  C.G.Jung

I see the parallels in those that wanted Germany to disarm with those today who feel a treaty with Iran will bring peace. It will not bring peace! It will bring war. It will usher in Armageddon. For weakness is what countries like Iran and Russia feed on. We live in a world where force rules. It is not what we want but it is what we humans do.

“It must indeed be dreaming if one thinks one can live unarmed in an anarchic world where only guile and force count” . C.G. Jung

Jung points out that even in the 1950’s the world say that Russia had aspiration to rule the world. And to force it’s sickness upon the world. With Russia and Iran getting cozier and cozier we are in for a double dose of poison.

“And that’s how it would be for you too with the Russians, for they also are universal saviors who want to cure the whole world with their own disease, just as the Nazis did” C.G. Jung

“You know very well: “I feel provoked,” said the wolf to the lamb”

This Obama treaty is built on weakness and by weak minds. Minds that believe the lamb can lay peacefully with the wolf. That only happens in fairy tales. This is not a fairy tale world. This is a world of good and bad. Of evil and of love. One must know who is who and what is what. I wish it were not so but in the world of flesh it is so.

“But let man, mindful of his hubris, be content with the lesser evil and beware of the satanic temptation of the grand gesture, which is only intended for show and self-intoxication” C. G. Jung

Here is the letter. Again I find the parallels as to then and to now eerily connected.

To Pastor Fritz Pfaffiin

Dear Pastor Pfaffiin, 22 March 1951

I was very glad to hear from you again. Unfortunately I cannot fulfill your wish.

I have so many other things to do and I can’t do nearly as much as I did before.

Nor am I allowed to overwork.

I don’t know what kind of dream material you could mean, and how it is supposed to link up with the unarmed neutrality of Germany.

The disarmament of Germany is itself a dream which could only occur in a sleeping nation-the very nation which has overrun its neighbors twice in a quarter of a century.

It is the dream of a profoundly warlike nation that consciously considers itself harmless and peace-loving.

It must indeed be dreaming if one thinks one can live unarmed in an anarchic world where only guile and force count.

Every German who is not asleep and dreaming knows that it is time, highest time to rearm, and the more consciously he does so the better it will be for peace.

The really dangerous ones are the harmless dreamers who don’t know that they want to perish gloriously yet again through their accursed playing the savior.

One time they strike their fellow men dead in order to convert them to the new religion of Nazism; the next time they preach disarmament in order to hand over their own country to Russian tyranny.

How would it have gone with us in Switzerland if we had had no army!

People like Herr Noack would have got a pension for doing useful preparatory work, and the rest of us would simply have been stood up against the wall by the culture-bringers.

And that’s how it would be for you too with the Russians, for they also are universal saviors who want to cure the whole world with their own disease, just as the Nazis did.

Do you seriously believe that any robber would be scared off by German disarmament?

You know very well: “I feel provoked,” said the wolf to the lamb.

One can also be neutral when armed, without falling a victim to militarism.

But unarmed neutrality seems to me, and probably to all non-Germans as well, the acme of failed instinct, to which I would add, from my intimate acquaintance with the German national character, German crankiness, which is something out of this world.

The dangerous thing about Noack’s proposal is that it represents yet another attempt at national suicide.

Whence comes the recklessness or “intemperance” of the Germans, whence their love of national downfall?

When Jacob Burckhardt heard of the declaration of Empire at Versailles, he exclaimed: “That means the downfall of Germany.”

Since then there has been no let-up in these down falling attempts.

One might, it seems to me, try to be reasonable for a change.

I hope, my dear Pastor, you will pardon these humble opinions.

They may make it clear to you why it seems to me quite out of the question-even if it were possible on other grounds-to give serious consideration to your proposal.

Please regard this letter as a private expression of my views. I have no wish to insult the German nation in the shape of its individual representatives.

To have arms is an evil; to have no arms is a still greater evil.

The reasonable man is modestly content with the lesser evil; he prefers to look at heroic Gotterdammerungen and suchlike Herostratic gestures in the theatre, to lock up madmen betimes and not worship them as leaders and saviors.

My words and warnings in this connection are as futile and useless as Jacob Burckhardt’s.

“Si non crediderunt tibi neque a udierunt sermonem signi prioris,” then only God speaks the word.

But let man, mindful of his hubris, be content with the lesser evil and beware of the satanic temptation of the grand gesture, which is only intended for show and self-intoxication.

Best regards, C.G. Jung

We will never pacify the closed minded ideology of Iran and Russia. They want a free America removed from this earth. They don’t play fair. They don’t play nice and they don’t play honest. I pray that Congress and the Senate reject this treaty with Iran and its silent partner Russia. Let us not be full of ourselves, and pretend to be Saviors and bringers of peace. It will kill us!

The world has already had one Savior. We cannot be so ego filled to believe we can be the second Savior.  Man cannot save man. Only God can save man from himself.

3 crosses 500x260

Look upon and welcome them with an open mind, and an open heart, the three crosses you will soon see upon your path to awakening. For they are no longer sorrowful. Because of Christ’s resurrection they are here today for your happiness. They will awaken you from your dream. You will see with your newly opened eyes, and feel with your now opened heart, the God within you.

When you chose to travel your destined path, your journey will move you through forests, soar you over majestic mountains, and traverse you across abundant open plains. Adventures and glories await you.

And then one day, a day that starts out just as the day before, something amazing will happen. A knowing will come upon you, almost as if in a vision; your first cross will appear on your path just off to the left. The left cross for you to witness, and then transcend above, is the cross of male. The left brain and mind of conforming ego society. Seeing only what is physical. Believing in separation from all.

If you are not captured by this cross, and search further, one day on your continued journey the second cross will appear upon your path. It will as the first cross appear suddenly and unexpected, as if a vision. This time however it will appear before you on the right side of your path. It is the cross of female mind. It is the cross of the mind of the holistic right brain. The mind that now reveals to you the unity in all of life. The connection of you to others on the path.

If you do not stay here, but continue on your path, remaining true to finding the third cross, it will one day appear directly, and ever so clearly in front of you. The third cross is no longer off your path. It is now your journey’s end. It sits within the beauty of the Lillie’s. You find now that you, and your path are now one, and have always been one. You have a path to travel that will, if you stay in the Lord, [the Law] if you follow the Light, will take you, then meld you eternally into the third cross of life.

You will now be on your true path, where you will neither wander, right nor left of the cross, but stay one with it. Here you will live the cross of your new birth, your resurrection from the physical to the eternal.

Your man mind: the dreaming mind that believed in separation from God, believed in lack, has awakened. The dream of earthly separation from God, is no more.

You awaken today to a world of abundance. Ask and ye shall receive. You are now safe, no longer in the dream state of separation from all. For when you awake, darkness is displaced by the light. The light of the Lord. The Light of the now recognized God within you. Only Light can displace the dark.

You are now an open cross. An open channel through which the magnificent, effortless creation of Christ now flows into your life. Christ now flows in and around you and manifests your Heaven on earth. You are still here: but now awake. You and Christ now work in seamless harmony. As one being, manifest your purpose, and your life. All goodness and abundance now effortlessly flows through you. As long as you remain in the Lord [the Law] of creation, you live forever in peace, happiness and in abundance for ever more, back in the Light of Creation.

The three crosses have melded into one. Goodness and mercy will now be with you for your eternal life.

In peace,

Steve Monahan
